Please consider joining my team in the annual Walk to End Lupus Now South Jersey, taking place in Ocean City, New Jersey.
I was diagnose in 2004 right after my 21st birthday. When I went to the doctors because I wasn't feeling well I had a butterfly rash across my face and wasn't able to walk without pain. My doctor walked in and said with even testing me you have lupus. She took my blood work gave me some medication and said to come back in a few days for the test results. Well i never made it back to her office. i was in the hospital a day later with 103 fever, blood count dropped and kidneys weren't working right. After 4 kidney biopsy, 6 rounds of chemo, many doses of steroids orally and through iv. I can sit here and say this disease is nasty.
It is estimated that 1.5 million Americans and 10,000 individuals in Southern New Jersey have lupus. Lupus is an acute and chronic (lifelong) autoimmune disease in which the immune system is unbalanced, causing inflammation and tissue damage to virtually every organ system in the body. It is complex, and no two cases of lupus are the same. After more than 50 years of no new treatments for lupus, recently a new drug has been approved. This is wonderful news; however, we need an arsenal of new safe treatments to conquer lupus because the new treatment is not for all people with lupus. There is hope on the horizon, and with your help, we can find additional better treatments and a cure for lupus.
Walk to End Lupus Now™ is the signature event of the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. In more than 50 cities across America, thousands of people walk to make a difference in the lives of those affected by lupus and to raise essential funds for research, education, and support services.
